I think your mom is afraid of the consequences. But it would be best to return the car now.

If the insurance company has been paying for it, then the rental company may not be upset, but I bet the insurance company will be.

Best to 'fess up, make arrangements to pay the overcharges over some period of time, and don't do this again.

For you - learn a lesson - adults can do dumb things - don't you make this mistake.

And yes, if left unresolved, this could lead to jail time.
References :
The best thing for your mother to do is just go ahead and turn the car in. and tell her not to ignore their calls. She needs to call them. As long as she ignores their calls, she is just digging herself a deeper hole. What the hell is she thinking anyway, doesnt't she know that she has to take it back where it is rented from?? If the other insurance companty is paying for it, it may be that they have stopped paying for it and the rental company is wanting their car back. I am surprised that there isn't already a warrant out for her arrest. I strongly suggest that you take the matters in your own hands and let them know that you know where the car is (for your mother's sake) if it makes her mad, oh well, she will just have to be mad and she will have to get over it, they will not be able to go after you legally, unless your name is tied in to the rental. if it isnt, you are fine. It is going to be up to the rental company and possibily the insurance company as far as any charges filed, if not already done.
References :
I have rented cars before,

If i were to re-enter the biz, Honda, and GM would get a resume and letter. And with VW's 50-state deisels hitting the shores for the 2009 model year, i bet you could move a few 49 mpg Jettas.

GM has the ultimate product line-up...from 60k Corvettes to the under 13k, 36mpg, Aveo. Honda (own one) flat out makes the best cars in at least 4 segments according to every SINGLE word ever written about them.

You should earn commissions in the 25% of the overage range. And a not exceptional 10 cars per month should earn you overr 50k per year.
References :
Depends on situation. Old 300 day unit they may sell at 3000 loss to get it out of their hair. New Murano's we have have lower MSRP from last year's model, that means LESS wiggle room now.

It is making it harder for lower income brackets to get vehicles, I see it every day. With foreclosures and repo's they are not agressive lending money to people with spotty credit or repo's in the past.
References :
Well Toyota does sell a lot of cars, but it all depends on gross they have in the vehicle, your normal pay is 25% of gross profit. Chevrolet has been good to me, as far as pay you have what is called draw v/s commision. Draw is an advance on unearned commision. then once a month they do what is called settle up where you give back what was advanced to you and you get the differance. a normal draw is 250-500 a week.
References :
Higher-end brands is the way to go (Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, etc.). Your clientele is more "no-hassle" and easier to deal with. They come in knowing what they want, usually have the "stroke" to get it (credit history, cash down, etc.), and don't want to deal with any stress.

Workload-wise, you're going to find long hours no matter where you go. Always keep that in mind.

Stick to it, and build a client base on referrals. Treat everyone you come to with respect and honesty, and you'll find that it's a fun career that can be very lucrative.
References :
Well I think the main thing to focus on here is that it will change the values of used cars. So if a dealer pays less it will probably be worth less as well and therefore pricing will reflect this.

If there is an influx of used cars into the market it will lower the values of used cars. When the values drop so does dealer pricing due to staying competitive etc.

I do not think they do not care and I do not think it means you can get a car for a bigger percentage discount than normal because pricing will follow true value.
References :
http://www.buyingacar101.com

Dealers only care about what they paid for the vehicle and what they can sell for at their establishment. With this information about repossessions, if its possible for dealers to buy vehicles cheaper at auctions, then this can lower the retail selling price due to the supply & demand of the vehicle.

The economy is ever changing, and if cars become cheaper in general due to all the repo'd cars, then this discount would also apply for their cost. This happened after Sept 11th because the new cars sold for 0%, which significantly dropped the value of the used cars and had a domino effect for each model year. I hope this helps and it's only an opinion.
